Winchell's Restaurant in Lexington, KY

"Best Rueben in Lexington KY" is a pretty bold statement, but I believe it to be true. Winchell's Bar and Grill is one of those little jewels of Lexington that only the locals know about. It isn't a chain, and it isn't owned by some mega-chagillionaire corporation. It is local and boy is it wonderful.

The menu is straight up Americana, and the beer is draft macrobrews. The atmosphere is 'local-sports-pub' and the specials are magnificent.

If you ask a Lexingtonian when they go to Winchell's you'll hear "Sunday Brunch" most of the time. This restaurant is noted for it's breakfast foods, but I say to give it a change for dinner. The Country Fried Steak with gravy is amazing, and so is the pulled pork dinner, but my fav of all fav's is the Rueben Sandwich with fries.

The Rueben is a delectable heap of corn beef on rye with thousand island and sweet vinegar slaw. The magic is in the slaw which substitutes most standard kraut. Does it make it bit different from a traditional rueben? Sure, but it doesn't matter, Reuben lovers and non-Reuben lovers will love this sandwich.

Winchell's is located on the very eclectic Southland Dr. of Lexington. It looks like a small shopping center eatery, but when you get through the doors it really is larger than it looks. If you go on Sunday, get there early, because it usually is packed.

They have an excellent selection of draft beers. They also have a full menu, full of great Irish fare. The bar is relatively new.

Ever since I saw the "How it all Ends" videos (Thanks Jason) I've been thinking about how to actually make a difference.  Amazingly it is rather hard to find resources, but I did find a few things that I could take away, so below are my findings.  I would also like it if the few people who possibly read this , to comment on this blog with any resources they have found.

First up is the "GREEN MOVEMENT"... we've all heard about it, but when I tried to think about actual ways of going green I was stuck.  Well, I found a site with 10 ways to "Go Green" >>go
I'll post the abridged version here:

1. Re-route your commute.
2. Buy used.
3. Buy local.
4. Compost your food scraps.
5. Change the thermostat setting and install energy saving devices.
6. Skip the bottled water at the grocery or convenience store.
7. Make your own cleaning supplies.
8. Think twice about new electronics.
9. Add one meatless meal per week.
10. Use your local library and other public amenities.

I was a little surprised at a few of the ways.  I would never have thought about the "Meatless Meal" but it makes sense.  Let's look at a few others ones.  Reroute your commute is pretty obvious.  Buying Used is good, however most people won't.  My thing is I just don't buy often, so I suppose my small income is making me enviromentally friendly. Buying Local is a great thing.  Composting my food scraps - Don't really do that, but most of the time I throw bad fruit and veg in my back yard and we recycle.  The thermostat setting is always a little high in the summer and low in the winter. I do need to insulate more.  Don't buy bottled water much. 7. making your own cleaning supplies is a tad too hippy...8.  Wow.. I've got trouble with this... however I don't really throw my old stuff out.. If I were to I'd just donate them. 9. Meatless meal... hmmm.. I could do that. 10.  I got the internet.. what more do I need?

So those were some good tips.  I really like the local aspect.  It really does help out everyone to buy local.  Not to mention the health benefits of eating fresh produce.  I just need a good local brewery  and I'd be set.

That was my resource for going green, but what about the stuff I don't want to give up . . . like my electricity.  I spent some additional time looking for info about solar panel systems and other alternative resources.  Again I kind of hit a wall.  The best site I could find for solar power kits and tips was Backwoods Solor Systems >>Go.  They have some really good tips for moving to alternative energy systems, not to mention the access to actually start building and acquiring solar panels etc to get started.  Looks like you can start building systems for as low  as a few thousand dollars.  A really great resources on the site is the recommendations for appliances (refridgerators and such). I'm not a tree hugging hippy that would die for and owl.  I love living in a psuedo city (Lexington) that has mostly suburban housing with the amenities of a city.  I love having neighbors I can walk to, bars I can walk to, groceries I can walk to and everything else.  I like driving 3 minutes to work and being able to do what I want in a 10 mile radius, but I also like the thought of doing it without killing the Earth and Environment at the same time.

I'm not much of an activist and I'm not a zealot, but I thought about some ways I could make a difference without really giving up my lifestyle.  I think I found a few answers and most importantly I educated myself for when I need to buy a new appliance or possible ways of switching to alternative power.

Let me know what you guys are doing, or ways you've thought of that you can make a difference withouth sacrificing your lives.

The site is just starting out, but I can tell that it will really be handy for college kids and any one who likes going out but not spending a bunch of money. Stephen the crazy bicycle hubcap guy surprised me when he didn't take a dump on the stage of America's next inventor. I don't think I have ever seen anyone on a reality tv show quite as crazy as Stephen the hubcap guy. This guy was absolutely nuts. He stayed on the stage for way too long after they dismissed him. What have I been doing? I wrote this really long thing about what I've been doing, but I think it would be inappropriate to post on the net. Not that I've done anything bad, it's just that it's got a lot of things about people that I wouldn't want to post without their consent.

It's been awhile: Invoicing and hardship

For the past 3 days I've been preparing and invoicing my company's client. I would never had thought it would take such time to simple billing. It has been absolutely horrindous... that isn't spelled right,but oh well. I've had to make spreadsheets and doc files for everything. Then spit it all out to pdf. I emailed all of the clients and notified them all. I imagine it will get faster since I just started doing it, but I bet there are hundreds of small businesses out there that could really use some help.

Small Businesses. I feel for you. I hope my company can come up with a software solution to save you time and money.

Google Calendars. I like it. I didn't really have a use for it until now. I'm using it to schedule invoice dates. I think it will work out for me.

I could also use an email system that could retain html templates. That would be handy. I'd love to personalize all of my business emails with html.

Notification and contact with clients is soooo important. Everyone likes to be notified of a payment deadline or an acknowledgement of payment. Those little flourishes really solidify the professionalism of your business.

I can't wait to solve some of these issues with web applications and webware.

EvC Forum: Does randomness exist?

Just found this and was very intrigued. Smarter people than I respond in this forum. It has been quite some time that I have read something that I went, "Hmm, I'm pretty dumb." I found this forum by looking into the golden ratio or 1.6183:1 . I hadn't seen this number or even thought about it in 10 years, where I had seen it in a disney film in Geometry class as a Sophmore.

As a graphic designer, I could really learn something from this rather attractive number. Human beings find it beautiful since its ratio is so "correct". The ratio is seen every where in the natural world; found in subjects like flowers and shells that humans find beautiful. It would only seem natural that a designer, whose main purpose is creating beautiful layouts for clients, should add the golden ratio into his arsenal of creativeness. It would at the very least speed my creative process along.

Whatever the case, it is imperative that I learn more about it before trying to execute using it.

Ah well, it would be nice to be 18 again, and KNOW EVERYTHING!

The Flaming Lips: At War With Complacency

MTVNews.com: The Flaming Lips: At War With Complacency happens to be a great article on the adventures of The Flaming Lips at the SXSW festival in Austin TX.

I have to admit I have just half heartedly followed the Flaming Lips, but I have never once over looked their influence on music. So check out the article if you feel a little like looking at some legends. I especially like the part about starting a parade- (The lips started a parade after their show because there was too many people at the concert for the tiny venue to hold - so rather than disappoint- they started a parade through Austin- much to the dislike of the local police and security). Great tale. You can't make this stuff up.

I have just gotten back into comix and here is the really freaky part; I'm actually reading them. I picked up a handful of comix the other day to try out, and DMZ happened to be one of them. DMZ is written by Brian Wood who is obviously a household name when it comes to comix. It is a wicked awesome read and anyone over the age of 13 would enjoy it. Love the graphix and everything. I'm going to try and pick up the rest of the issues ASAP. Just thought I would spread the love.

1st off : $10 a week art contest. Like a Jam but the winner -as voted on by the peers- wins $10 cash- no questions asked.

2nd: When a person uploads art the have the option of putting their paypal data along with a sell price. This means anyone viewing it can have the option to buy original- of course this means uploading the original art, but makes it very easy to make money off a competition piece.

3rd: add store for folks to "add" their pieces to the gallery for sale- upload same as it is to enter contest.

Fried Crispy online maggy

I really wanted to draw this out, but I couldn't find my book, and then I wanted to write this out and this was the best place I could think of to post my ideas. I don't rightly know if anyone is going to read this, so I think it should just be best if I do it here and whatever happens happens.. Right?

Okay.. I'm turning Fried Crispy.com into an online maggy. I don't really have enough time to post it all the time, and quite frankly I don't think that i have enough endurance and creativity to constantly produce the same type of info all the time and consistently good.. so what i'm going to do , and what seems the most novel to me is: create an online magazine that comes out monthly and is different every time.

The front page will change every month.. That said.. articles will change.. interviews will change.. everything will change.. and if I want to have a character comeback - they can.. if they don't want to then they don't have to.. The important thing to keep in mind though is that it would only have to be fresh once a month.. and it wouldn't have to be deep. all it really has to do is have links directly from the front. ...

This probably isn't even a new idea.. it just is the way that I want Fried Crispy to become.. I've been thinking this over for a bit and it just seems too complicated to have constant/static sections that keep growing and growing. I don't honestly think I can come up with sections that are even broad enough to add to.. It would be much easier just to draw a cover / slice it up and add on from there. It gives the website a much more fluid life of its own and doesn't rely on one grand idea-- it can change over and over.

So i've talked myself into it. Now I just need to come up with some cool articles for March.

Julian's Dining Room and Lounge. Daytona Beach

Today I was looking at some pictures I had of my Daytona Beach Trip Aug of 2004. I've been using those pictures for a project I'm doing for Spring Break this year called Xtreme Spring As I was looking through the pix I found a picture of a menue I had taken when in Ormond Beach. The menu was for Julians Dining Room and Lounge. This place has been owned by the same person since it was built in 1967. This place had one of the best atmosphere's I've ever had the chance to enjoy. The interior looks like it hasn't changed since 67' either. The restaurant has a hawaiian feel to it that is awesome. The food was really good too. They had live music for our dining experience and the singer even came to our table for pictures. All in all it was one of my favorite dining experience of all time and just remeniscing about it makes me want to drive 10 hours all the way back just for a fantastic meal. The US Navy

US Navy is just one of the many sites I have to design. In fact it needed to be started yesterday. I'm a little behind, but I ain't uh feared. Polo Jeans is in the works and I gotta redo the flash for that lodging co. The redo for them kinda p-o's me off. I spent a good while working on that project, making it as cool as I could for their demands. Then after it is done, it never fails, they want to go and screw it up. What kind of world do we live in? I'm in constant awe of just how amazing people really are. I had no idea they were graphic designers. You learn something new every day.

Netflix: Welcome To Netflix - Rent DVDs Online

I had to cancel my subscription to Netflix the other day. I just couldn't justify the service. Here was my main problem: time. Lemme explain.

I got my first ordered movies in 1 day. So I had to watch 3 movies immediately. Who has time to watch 3 movies in one day? No one. So I staggered it. I watched one movie a day and sent them back the same way - finished it sent it back. Well the weekend screws up the flow of movies Pretty much after the initial 3 movies- you were lucky to get 3 movies in a week. Now that isn't bad- that works out to about 12 movies a month, which figures to around 2 bux a movie. By most standards that is a great rental price, and to be honest, the selection of movies was immaculate. Unfortunately having to pay $20 a month for 3 movies at a time was like having a job. Maybe I'm weird, but receiving movies in the mail, was like getting a bill that you have to pay and send out as soon as possible (as not to forget about paying it). This is a horrible way to view the process, but $20 bux for less than 10 movies is pathetic. It wasn't like I was ordering up all new releases- in fact I think I only got 1 new release movie. Most of the things I rented were tv series.

Time was the biggest Issue I had with my subscription. You sign up for the subscription size based on the amount of movies you want to see at a time. 3 at a time is the subscription I joined. The average turn around rate for a movie was about 3 days. 1 day to receive it, 1 day to watch it and 1 day to send it back, then 1 day to send the next, 1 day to watch it, and 1 day to send it back. Then the week-end comes up and messes the whole process up. I feel that this process would have been sped up if there was a shipping center in my town- but the closest one is 1 hour away, which delayed the shipping by a day- that slowed the process down, and I can't imagine what it does to rural areas.

I have to say that I was down right startled at how easy it was to quit. That will make a huge difference in whether or not I ever rejoin. I didn't get hassled and it was so easy to find the cancel button. I clicked the button, confirmed my cancellation and I was done. Fantastic.

I would recommend Netflix to anyone who has a bad habit of late fees, someone who thinks that $20 bux for 10 movies is a good deal,someone who likes a large catalogue of movies, and someone who doesn't care about what movie they are watching tonight-(cuz your stuck with what you ordered). If you can't deal with one of those reasons, then netflix is not for you my friend.

Netflix- You're good, but not good enough for me Right now. I will probably rejoin when $20 bux doesn't matter that much to me... but unfortunately it does.

SO.. I've been soo busy.. I've got so much stuff to do.. so much .. I have 2 sites I've got to design immediately. I have the Navy Seals Challenge site to design for uhh the Navy Seals, then I have to do a redesign for a site called www.savagegarnish.com WHoot WHoot. So while I'm designing them I have to do a complete ad campaign mock up for Ralph Lauren Polo Jeans. THis is supposed to correspond to their G.I.V.E Campaign which looks like it does a lot of good for the community. I hope I can make something that speaks to their needs and compliments their efforts well.

I had a great Christmas. Had lots of fun with the family and thought everything was excellent. Got to see some old friends, and had a very good time. I'll have some pics up soon

The keyword verification tool is also great if you want to know if your site shows up if you search for certain keywords in google or yahoo. It really is a good website for finding out how well your organic search engine optimization is doing.

Netfilx- I'm slightly disappointed

So I tried out netflix- still trying out netflix - I have to say I'm a little let down. I love their catalogue but Having to wait for my movies sucks. I've been renting the 1st season of Lost and I have to say that Netflix is just not fast enough for me. I pretty much watch the movies as soon as I get them and I send them out as soon as I've watched them. In a word, it just takes too long to continue on. This is a pain since I like watching series dvds. I effectively have to wait 3 days to receive them- watch them that night - send it out and wait for them to receive the disc which takes about 2 days- then wait another 3 days for my next disc. So that means I get through the cycle about once a week. THAT IS CRAP!. It might be faster if we had a netflix location in my city, but I dont' so I have to send my discs to the closest location which is an hour away - which is why there is such a delay I'm sure. Oh well. I'm gonna try it for a little while longer. Stay tuned

Mission Ukraine - Helping Orphanages and the Needy through Christ

man o man... I know that things take time and patience, but I'm a little upset that this site isn't up and functioning. It seems that we just can't get anything finished- or even up to a functioning level. Mission-Ukraine was a website that was supposed to be up and running 2 weeks ago. However, comma, it isn't up and working yet- and truthfully, I don't know when it will be up and working. SOOOO. I wish I was more optimistic.. but I'm not. It has almost been an entire month, and there is no end in site. YUCK YUCK YUCK>

Netflix: Welcome To Netflix

I just signed up for Netflix the other day. My first 3 dvds should arrive today. That will make it a 3 day delivery. and probably 3 days to send them back. 18 bux a month for about 3 movies a week for a month. SO 12 movies for 18 bux isn't too bad. THe main reason I'm trying it out is becuz they have so many more movies to pick from. I have a much better selection of tv series dvds, which is great. I wanted to rent "LOST" so that I could find out what everyone is talking about. I also wanted to rent "mystery Science theatre 3000" cuz I haven't seen it since I was a kid and watched it on Comedy Central. Sooo I should be receiving my first movies today.. and we'll find out if Netflix is worth it.

Things that I need to finish

It's already november, and I still have so many things to finish. Don't get me wrong, I've gotten lots of things completed and alot of things started, but I also have a very very long list of things that are just sitting there waiting to be finished.
The first thing that I need to finish is the new tutorial section for Solidoxygen.com. This will be a great addition for the site because it will allow for more tutorials and more diverse tutorials at that. I want to be able to include tuts for flash, css, photography, music . . . all sorts of things. I really want solidoxygen.com to become a great resource for everyone.
Second, I want to finish Discount Duplications.com. This site was a suprise for my uncle. I wanted to give his old site something new. Make it stand out, and bring new business. His older site was definitely not very pretty and I think that probably hurt his business. The site was good in the 90's. not so much these days.
Third, I want to finish Official Collectibles.com, and Artifactzone.com. Both of these sites have potential, but I just don't have the expertise to finish these sites alone. They need alot of help, but I don't have the resources or time for either venture.
Fourth, I want to finish Drink Prices.com. This one has potential, as well as interest. This website would benefit every college student in the world. It has a lot of possibility to just take off, but unfortunately it would need expertise that I don't have.

Sooo.. looks like I need to get busy doesn't it.
